Do Most Cars in South Africa Have CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes: the large majority of passenger vehicles sold new in SA since around 2018 support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, at least on some trims. CarPlay and Android Auto only started appearing in SA showrooms in meaningful numbers from 2018, so anything older is usually a no, and anything newer is usually a yes with trim-level fine print.
That fine print is the trap. Two identical-looking Hiluxes can differ purely on trim. A base model with a radio and Bluetooth misses out while the next trim up gets the full touchscreen. Brochures don't help much either, because some brands rename the feature entirely. Volkswagen calls it App-Connect, and plenty of VW spec sheets never print the word CarPlay at all.
Bakkies: Hilux, Ranger, Amarok and D-Max
South Africa's favourite bakkies all support CarPlay and Android Auto on the right trims, and all four have a catch worth knowing. The Toyota Hilux got CarPlay and Android Auto from the October 2020 facelift, but only on Legend and Raider trims with the 8-inch screen; the workhorse S and SR trims have no touchscreen at all. The Ford Ranger next-gen (2023 onward) runs wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on top trims with the 12-inch screen, while the XLT's 10.1-inch screen is wired only. The previous Ranger (2017 to 2022) has wired support on Wildtrak and XLT with SYNC 3.
The new Volkswagen Amarok is mechanically a Ranger twin, so 2023-onward models get the same wireless treatment. And the Isuzu D-Max has supported both systems since 2019, even though Isuzu doesn't appear on Google's official brand list. That's exactly the kind of gap the global lists leave and a local dataset catches.
Hatchbacks: Polo, Polo Vivo, i20 and Starlet
SA's best-selling hatchbacks are mostly covered, and the Polo Vivo is the big news. From the September 2024 facelift, every Polo Vivo trim ships with a 9-inch touchscreen running wired CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Before that facelift, only Highline and GT trims had it. Given the Vivo is SA's number one selling passenger car, that single change put CarPlay into more local driveways than any luxury launch ever will.
The regular Polo MK6 (2018 onward) has wired support on every trim with an infotainment screen, badged as App-Connect. The Hyundai i20's third generation (2020 onward) goes one better with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on its top-trim Display Audio system. Toyota's Starlet carries confirmed support on the XR trim, with lower trims listed as available on selected models. Trim matters, always.
SUVs: Fortuner, Tucson, Creta and Corolla Cross
Popular SA SUVs are the strongest category: the current Toyota Fortuner supports wired CarPlay and Android Auto on every trim, from the 2.4 GD-6 up to the 2.8 GR-S, all on a 9-inch touchscreen. The Toyota Corolla Cross has had both systems since its 2022 local launch. The Hyundai Tucson is year-dependent: the 2022 to 2024 NX4 runs wired on the trims with built-in navigation, and the 2025 facelift moved to wireless as standard across the range on a 12.3-inch screen. The Hyundai Creta follows the same pattern, wired and year-dependent through 2024, wireless from the 2025 facelift.
Notice the trend: wireless is finally arriving, but only on brand-new facelifts. Everything from 2018 to 2024, which is most of what SA actually drives, is wired. Chinese Brands: Haval, Chery, Omoda, GWM and BYD
Quick reassurance for the growing number of SA buyers going Chinese: most BAIC, Chery, Omoda, Haval, GWM, Geely and BYD models sold here today come with full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and they often out-spec the established brands at the same price. The Haval Jolion has supported both since its 2021 SA launch. Chery's Tiggo range and the Omoda C5 support both too, despite some of these brands not appearing on Google's official list.
The narrow exception is Carbit Link, a proprietary system found on a small slice of older Chinese-brand trims, more common on older BAIC models than current ones. Carbit Link looks similar on the screen but isn't CarPlay or Android Auto, and a wireless adapter won't work with it. It's a check worth doing, not a reason to avoid the brands.

How Can I Check if My Car Has CarPlay?
The most reliable check is the cable test: plug your phone in with a cable to the car's data USB port, and if CarPlay or Android Auto appears on the screen, your car supports it. No brochure reading, no forum threads, no guessing. If nothing appears on any port, the car doesn't support it, whatever the salesperson remembers.

If your car never came with CarPlay or Android Auto, an adapter won't add it, and it's better you hear that from us than after a wasted purchase.
